Tomorrow is Earth Day, which means, basically, you have no shopping days left!
Of course, this being Earth Day, maybe that’s a good thing. In any case, you’ve still got time to make some plans.
The day itself is Thursday, April 22, and here are some things going on around the Charlotte area in honor of it:
- Carolina Farm Trust Earth Week. This is an organization that supports local farmers, and they’re hosting events over the next few days at the urban farm at Aldersgate, 4101 Summerdale Ln. There’s live music! There’s yoga! There’s a concert! Here’s a link for details.
- TreesCharlotte Sapling Giveaway. TreesCharlotte is giving tree saplings to nine breweries and restaurants to distribute to guests on April 22. We’re talking river birch, white oak and persimmon trees. Here’s a link to find out more.
- Earth Day Film Festival. This is pretty cool because you don’t have to leave the house to do it! That’s good for the planet, and good for your health this year! It’s sponsored by Omimeo Mime Theatre and The Charlotte Film Society. They’re offering six free films, all to be watched virtually. Follow the link to register.
There’s more, but hey — Mother Earth takes care of us all year. Shouldn’t we do more than celebrate one day? How about the rest of the year? Well here are some things we can do:
- Do the usual. Recycle, compost, use more-efficient light bulbs. Is that so much to ask?
- Plant something. You have a beautiful yard; we’ve all seen it. Get out there and plant something we’ll all enjoy for months and years to come.
- Ride your bike. If you don’t have a bike, borrow one. We’re not asking you to get rid of your car. It’s just a start. Can you think of anywhere better for riding your bike safely than right here in Stephens Grove? No, you can’t.
- Get produce from a local farmers market. OK, so the Huntersville Growers’ Market doesn’t get up and running for a couple of weeks. It goes from May through August. But there are others in the area. Haven’t you ever heard of Google Maps?
