It’s December in Stephens Grove, and as usual, the best way to keep up with what’s going on is to check your Facebook page.
For instance:
- You’ll see that that the Wiest family won the annual Christmas Light Fight.
- Santa came and went. He was here on December 3rd, and on Facebook you can see some of the kids who came to see him. We hope you didn’t miss it.
Speaking of missing it, if you didn’t get your orders in when Sergio Mejia first made the announcement last month, there will be no tamales for you on Christmas Day. And that would be sad, because we hear they’re awesome.
The first announcement went out on Nov. 23:
Hi there Neighbors! So it’s time! The holidays are coming up and we’re making Tamales again!! So in California…where we’re from…it’s very common for people, especially Mexicans like us, who know good cooking, to sell Tamales during the holidays. Just so you know my mom is an INCREDIBLE cook. She makes everything from scratch. My mom is also SUPER clean always. Our kitchen is like a place of worship. We are making 2 kinds of Tamales.. Shredded Pork Tamales with Red Sauce and Cheese with Roasted Poblano Chile tamales. Prices have gone up for a lot of our Ingredients, so we’re charging $37 dollars a dozen this year. We will have 2 delivery dates. Dec 15th & 22nd. We are going to start taking orders now, and are asking for a $10 deposit for each dozen. Venmo or cash will be best. We completely sold out immediately last year, so put in your order. We can only make a certain amount. Anyone who ordered last year, can tell you how good they were. A few neighbors told me they ate them for Christmas Dinner….that’s what we do! PRIVATE MESSAGE me for orders. Feel free to ask any questions!!
While his mom is “an incredible cook,” Sergio is obviously an incredible salesman, because two days after that, he had to announce that “We are no longer taking orders.” He said if Mom decided to make more, they would “put you on a waiting list.”
This is hardly surprising, given the response that greeted the initial news. As one neighbor put it, “I LOVE(D) THESE LAST YEAR. I ordered some for myself and my… family ate them all. I’ll have to order double this year.”
Let’s hope that customer ordered right away.
As for the rest of you, be alert next year! Aside from being delicious according to all we hear, they’re also convenient: If you want to freeze them and save them for the big day, Sergio says “after we make them we can freeze them and not steam them, then you can steam them when you are ready to enjoy.”
So no excuses! Keep an eye on Facebook, and you can be first in line next time. And in between, you’ll be better-informed all around about what’s going on around here.
