For so long, so many of us have longed for the time when “things are back to normal.”
Well, we’re not entirely there, with everything. But we are with one big thing: Swim team is back!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, after a year off, the Stingrays will be back in action in June and July. Our first match-up is an “away” meet on June 8, at Wedgewood, which is at 8400 Londonshire Dr.
In fact, here’s the whole schedule, so you can make plans, whether you’re a swimmer or a fan. Parents note that swim meets start promptly at 6 p.m. Meets held on Tuesday evenings will have a rain date of Wednesday. Those on Wednesday will have a rain date of Thursday evenings.
If you’re new to the team, there will be swim tests and a chance to meet the coach on May 24. The very next day, practice starts for everybody, starting at 5:30 p.m. for those 10 and under, and 6:30 for 11 and older.
Speak of meeting the coach: Our head coach is Hope Carpenter, captain of the swim and dive team at Davidson College. She’s been a competitive swimmer since she was 6 years old, and is now finishing up her third year at Davidson. She has been a lifeguard and swim instructor with the YMCA for the past five years. Her favorite stroke is the backstroke, and when she is not swimming, she loves to listen to music, eat Chinese food, and talk about her cat Missy (named for five-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin).
As for how weather affects practice, here are the rules:
- A little rain? Practice is still on.
- Thunder? Everybody out of the water for 30 minutes.
- Lightning?!? Everybody off the pool deck.
Delays or cancellations will be posted on Facebook and/or via email. Beyond that, use your best judgment.
Of course, maybe you’re not interested in competing, but just like to swim. There are a lot of us like that, and there’s a schedule for you, too, and more information, including pool rules meant to make the summer safer and more pleasant for everyone — all on the Stephens Grove Amenities page. Also, you’ll find there the form for renting the pool for any special private occasions you may have coming up.
