Yes, the pool opened on the weekend of May 14-15 — although at times we had some doubts about this.
That’s because of the national shortage of lifeguards. As you know, since the pandemic, it’s been hard to hire people for all sorts of jobs — just ask someone who manages a fast-food restaurant. Pools have not been immune to this problem. You may have read last year about what a tough time pools had hiring enough safety personnel here in the Charlotte area last summer. Well, the problem hasn’t gone away.
Our HOA board considered not opening on the 14th because of this challenge. But after getting feedback from residents, it was decided to proceed, but with every precaution.
Here’s what board President Shannon Waterman posted on Facebook on May 12. After announcing that the pool would open for the May 14-15 weekend — and the following weekend — she said:
PLEASE READ changes to RULES until further notice.
- SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK!
- WATCH YOUR CHILDREN CLOSELY!
- CHILDREN UNDER 14 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN OVER 18YRS OF AGE.
- ALL other rules apply as normal. Please see the POOL Rules located on our website.
We will continue to keep you posted as we work through the details of our 2022 pool season. Our hopes are to be open Memorial Day weekend for the Summer as usual.
Any concerns or questions please email the BOD @ theboard@stephensgrove.com.
Thank you for your patience,
BOD
We have always been strict about children being accompanied. If you’ll recall, our pool rules posted already required that children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by someone over the age of 16. Now, anyone under 14 has to have a real adult, over 18, present to get into the pool.
We strongly urge everyone to take these rules seriously. The pool is for safe, family fun, not for taking risks.
We hope you and your family have a happy, healthy summer!
And if you are interested, or know someone who is interested, in becoming a lifeguard this summer, Shannon has posted this information about applying, so please check it out!
