This week, Gov. Roy Cooper extended “Phase 2” rules in North Carolina for another three weeks. The precautions were supposed to have ended this week, but the rising numbers of new cases prevented that.
In other words, it’s not over. And won’t be over for a while. Learn more about what Phase 2 means here.
Anyway, in light of all that, this blog won’t recommend that you go out to a ball game; or browse through a snug, quaint bookshop; or visit downtown Asheville, or any of those kinds of things we promoted last summer. And whether we suggest you go pick apples depends on how things are going in August and September.
But we’ve been looking around to see what opportunities there are to enjoy and learn near here – without leaving home.
The Charlotte Observer offered some good ideas recently, and other sites from the area are helpful as well. For instance, we liked the Coronavirus Resources page offered by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (the “Charlotte’s Got a Lot” people). It included a number of ways to get up-to-date information via social media and official websites.
But that’s business. On to the fun stuff:
- Shop local – from home. Here are some local businesses that invite you to shop virtually, including Ole Mason Jar, the Pink Hangar, and The Sporting Gent. Shop in your pajamas, and, if you’d like, get yourself some new pajamas.
- Stream your way to a new you. Break a sweat and get fit from home, participating in online exercise classes from a variety of local coaches. Just try not to fall asleep during the yoga classes.
- Enjoy a local museum, without going there. Browse the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art’s collection, learn about exhibiting artists at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture or dig into Charlotte’s past with the Brooklyn exhibit at the Levine Museum of the New South. You can even travel to your favorite museum elsewhere, from Australia to Italy — without leaving your living room.
There’s more, but that should hold you for a while. Assuming you still need some more ideas next month, we’ll try to provide them.
